We're growing various veggies but another plot has some very large, beautiful sunflowers growing. Here are some pics. I'm very happy with these and I may actually print them at some point to put on the wall.
This is Chris and Sara, a soon-to-be-engaged couple who was willing to get dressed up and walk around with the paparazzi on a hot Sunday afternoon. It was my first time doing something like this so I’m really happy with they way the came out. I don’t really like people because it’s a lot of pressure to get that “One” shot. They were very open and understanding and I think Sara had done some modeling before; she definitely had the posing down.

Chris Deeringhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03889727827899358305noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3410562755089490771.post-41079702769551720462010-06-22T18:55:00.001-05:002010-06-22T18:58:19.619-05:00Our GalleryLast Sunday was our Gallery at the church. It was a culmination of both our photography class as well that of the art class and a chance for us to display our works. I don’t think anyone but Perry displayed any photos taken during the class, but everyone’s photos came out very nicely. I got a little carried away and ended up printing out 13 8x10 photos, 12 of which I mounted on foam board and one I framed, with the intention of gifting it.

Well everyone gushed over my photos as they do and I tried to play humble as I do but as a Words of Affirmation person, I soaked it all up. Everyone one encouraged me to sell them (though no one offered to buy one) but I still have no idea how to go about doing that. I was tossing the idea of setting up a booth at one of the many crustacean related festivals around with Kristy. Who knows, we’ll see.

Because of the recent craziness I’ve been neglecting both of my blogs and I have a back log of photos to share. I’ll work on doing that in the next couple of days.Chris Deeringhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03889727827899358305noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3410562755089490771.post-13126950057523491262010-05-06T17:58:00.001-05:002010-05-06T17:59:40.746-05:00The Slow Shutter Waterfall EffectWe had been talking about trying to get the cool effect in falling water in Photo Class. While on our trip to Missouri we stopped at a little roadside park that had a creek running through it. I took the chance to try out this technique. The photos aren’t anything spectacular but I did manage to get the effect. I got it by switching the camera to Shutter Priority mode and leaving the shutter open for 2 seconds. I also changed the Auto White Balance to the Cloudy setting. It got the cool cascade while maintaining the light levels and not washing everything out.
Anyway, after work last week I stopped by the Diamond Jack's casino. Not to gamble away my hard earned money, but because there is a train trellis over the Red River right next to it. I'd drive by that bridge twice a day and have always wanted to stop and photograph it but have never taken time to do so. Well I finally did go and got some great photos. I was constantly looking over my shoulder for the train to come barreling toward me at any moment, but I edged my way out.

Well for a couple of weeks now I've been grabbed at the last minute (literally) to take photos of things we had. The first week was when we had Darrel Evans (the creator of the song "I'm trading my sorrows", among others). The service was already started when Anna Joy, the paster's wife, asked me to take photos. I've started getting in the habit of taking my camera everywhere I go so I went out to the car to get it and tried to get a few good ones. This was my first experience taking concert-style photos so it was a great learning experience. Here's some of the good ones:

The next week Anna Joy snagged me as I was coming through the door and asked if I would take some photos of the kids Palm Sunday skit. There wasn't anything too great with that but I took the opertunity to also take some stock photos. Here are those:
My bad. I think the initial surge of excitement surrounding the class, getting new gear, and the prospect of selling online has worn off a little, especially now that I realize this semi-pro photographer thing is going to be some work and I can't just take photos of what ever I find interesting and sell them by the hundreds. But I still love the camera and am still enjoying what I do. I may never become a famous photographer and change my name to Claude, but I'm learning and we'll see what God has for me down the road.
"So how is selling stock photography working out for you?" you may ask. Well here are my current stats at the companies I've submitted to.

123RF.com
Accepted = 0
Pending = 24
Rejected = 0
Sold = 0

Crestock.com
Accepted = 0
Pending = 37
Rejected = 0
Sold = 0
This site is annoying me. It was the first site I submitted to over a month ago and they still haven’t approved/disapproved my photos.

BigStockPhoto.com
Accepted = 15
Pending = 19
Rejected = 28
Sold = 0

Dreamstime.com
Accepted = 9
Pending = 0
Rejected = 26
Sold = 1!
I like the upload form on this site. It's fast and I can do multiple ones at the same time.

So I'm officially published! Don't worry; I won't let my $.35 go to my head.Chris Deeringhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03889727827899358305noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3410562755089490771.post-59217310619455469402010-03-16T15:00:00.021-05:002010-03-16T15:00:02.457-05:00Tricks of the Trade - Episode 1: A "Catch" to the Eye
I thought I'd pretend that there was a large following of interested photographic people who are following my blog, because I'm egotistical like that, and post some tips from time to time of things I've learned from other people or from playing around myself. This is one from a site I found detailing how to shoot children (with the camera, that is all) and how to edit photos. We picked up a tomato and a couple other things. I also snapped some pics (because I'm the weird guy who always has his camera on him). I got several nice ones and plan on posting them for stock. My previous experience was more or less point and click with a few adjustments on the fly. Now, I have to decide do I want my wide-angle or telephoto lenses? Use the on-board flash (the ugly maker), the mounted flash, or no flash? And if I use a flash should I use the diffuser and/or angle the mount away? Do I go with the prescribed settings for different scenarios or do I mess with the aperture and shutter speed to get what I want? It's all well and good when I have the time to figure it out but when my subject is running away, or setting (in the case of the Sun), or burning (in the case of the food on my grill!) I don't have the time to figure all of that out and I'm usually not happy with what I get.

Everything I've been reading the last couple of weeks tells me that I just need to practice and get to know my camera (duh). I just wish they had sent a operating manual. All they sent was this 1/2 inch cu...... oh, well this should help.Chris Deeringhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03889727827899358305noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3410562755089490771.post-32075163285776010132010-03-12T20:03:00.001-06:002010-03-12T20:04:37.047-06:00Oh So PrettyIsn't it lovely? And the pictures are amazing! The things I used to have to work for with my old camera happen automaticlly now. It's AWESOME!
By the way, since I got the camera on Friday last week, I've take 692 photos. Most of those were just practice but if I keep it up my cost/photo will go down. Currently I'm at about $2.29/photo. Need to keep shooting.
Chris Deeringhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03889727827899358305noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3410562755089490771.post-69483687475109338602010-03-11T16:56:00.000-06:002010-03-11T16:56:43.908-06:00What's in a Name?I'm trying to make a name for myself, literally. I want to create a "company", mostly in name only, so I can use for things like business cards and maybe a website or real company one day. "Why business cards?” you say. I figure it's a little more legit and less suspicious if when photographing a building or children in a park or at the Boardwalk, when I can say, "no I'm really not a criminal pervert, here's my card". "Well why worry about a company name and not just use your own name," you then say. Man, you sure are interrupting my blog a lot. Anyway, if photography is something I would like to continue to do beyond just a hobby, even one day trying to make a quasi-career out of, then I'd like to establish a standard now. I'd like to have a name in place and keep it that way so that I don't have to go back and change things like e-mail addresses and User names down the road.

So, what I need is help picking a name. Please give me some suggestions for a good Photography company. So far I'm leaning toward Deering Photo. Original I know! Other suggestions included:

-Deerster.com (suggested by a coworker which I thought weird at first but it's no worse than Google, Mozilla, or BigDaddy)
-Deering Photography (I like the shorter version)
-D&D Photography (No idea what the other "D" is for but I like the ring of it (and D&D is awesome!))

Please, lend some ideas and help out!Chris Deeringhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03889727827899358305noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3410562755089490771.post-81197339937735070792010-03-10T15:00:00.002-06:002010-03-10T15:00:00.704-06:00Photography Workshop - Portrats
Well week 3 of our workshop came and went. I've decided I'm not much of a studio guy and not a people person at all. Needless to say I was less than enthused about my results this week. We worked on portrats using a white background an impromptu "volunteer" (the daughter of one of our classmates). The little girl (who's name I never did catch) was cute, though kind not very generous with the smiles, but it wouldn't have mattered if Shirly Temple was sitting there. I couldn't get the focus right, my lighting was bad meaning I couldn't get the flash to do what I wanted. Our book said to use a tripod, a focal length of 85-100, and an F-stop of F/11. I tried all of that and more and it was just not working for me. Not a great first experence with my new equipment, though I did get to play with some of the features including my remote which was cool. Here are the best that I got but I don't think they look much better than your standard mom-with-a-point-and-shoot picture.

Chris Deeringhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03889727827899358305noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3410562755089490771.post-85674735394581222192010-03-09T15:00:00.000-06:002010-03-09T15:00:02.506-06:00It's Here! Confused? Never mind, I think I'm funny. Anyway, it's not really about photos. Thursday I skipped out on work for a bit to go help with a Squadron project. We're working on refurbishing a B-17 Flying Fortress. Our job of the day was to replace the elevators (the flaps on the rear "wings"). I don't know too much about mechanics and I know squat about fixing an airplane but I love History and the Air Force so I'm more than willing to lend a hand where I can. It was very cool and we got to go and see the rest of the inside of the plane (and I got photos of course). Not a bad day.
After more than a year of haggeling, promising, and begging I have purchased my new camera. Not only that I was able to get all of the additional gear I will need to help me take photos better. We were very blessed, first by three foster children, then by a very substantial tax return in part because of them. We were able to actually pay off our car and have enough to (mostly) cover all of my basic camera gear. God is good, eh? And for the record, I realize that it's just my own money that I'm getting back and spending, but still it's nice.
The items I'm getting are as follows:

After receiving a kitchen pass last night, I decided to go down town to the Boardwalk in Bossier City and into downtown Shreveport. At our workshop last week Perry was talking about how he wanted to get some nighttime city shots from I-20. I wasn't going to brave the perils of the interstate so I took the safety of the Boardwalk. It's normally a 15-30 min drive to get there but Saturday night traffic was terrible. I guess there were a lot of other kitchen passes as well. Anyway, I was able to get some pretty cool shots from the water's edge (or at least as close as we're allowed to get) and then moved up to the Texas Street Bridge for a birds eye view. Finally I moved over to Shreveport and got some cool "streaming" shots.

I learned several things during my trek. 1) This city (cities) is beautiful at night. 2) I figured out how best to use my settings and especially how to use my manual setting (I have to first go to Aperture priority and set that, then to Shutter and set that. Manual will then use those two settings). 3) Bridges move, A LOT, and getting a "tack sharp" photo on them is not easy. 4)I need to get a remote for my shutter because trying to time traffic 12 seconds out is not fun (10 sec for the timer and 2 for the shot itself). And 5) How to sharpen and contrast cityscapes in Photoshop.

In it I discussed my disappointment in my ability to take any decent photos of downtown Shreveport while I was walking around. Well I went back and decided to experiment with them. There's a process called High Dynamic Range Imagery (HDR) where by you take 3 or more photos at different ISOs, one normal, one or two at a stops lower and one or two at stops higher. Then you take fancy software and it will tone map and merge the photos into one picture where the shadows are very dark and the highlights are very light and all the colors are very vibrant. Take a moment and Google Images HDR to get an idea of what it's supposed to look like.

Well, since I have neither the camera nor the fancy photo software (yet, see previous post) I had to fake it. What I did was take the one photo I had and I manipulated the color to give it a faux HDR look. First, using Photoshop Elements 6, I went to Enhance>Unsharp Mask... From there I increased the Amount % and Radius up or down until I got something I liked. I didn't touch the Threshold. I then either raised or lowerd the Contrast and Saturation so I got the color I wanted. Again, this is not the "correct" way to do this but it will work in a pinch. Take a look below and see how they came out.

P.S. In The Salvation Army photo I had to Shop out some power lines running through it. That was a bit of a challenge!

Stock photography, for those who don't know, is a large database of photos, art, and graphics. Instead of a site hiring their own photographer to go out and take photos for them, they just buy them from one of these sites. It's been something I've been toying with for a couple of weeks now. I co-worker who is business inclined suggested it to me. My goal is to one day be able to sell my photos but I had always envisioned printing them all out in various sizes and different frames and sitting on a street corner or at a craft fair and hocking my wares. I hadn't really thought about posting and selling until recently and since this whole "world wide web" experiment seems to be taking off, I'm jumping on the bandwagon.

I'm going to take it slow and only add one company at a time. I'm joining only non-exclusive sites meaning that I am free to sell through other companies. Multiple (theoretical) income streams! The first site I went with was Crestock.com. They're not the biggest or the best but it was pretty easy to get involved. Just create an account (make sure you read the Consent for any site before you agree, it's your property you're loaning after all) and start uploading photos. They only pay a 20% commission! (30% after you sell 100 photos) which is pretty awful, but since they aren't one of the big hitters yet it's easier for someone new like me to get my feet wet and learn the ropes. I'm also hoping that they'll have a less stringent Quality Control (QC) process and more of my photos will get through. Still, making 20% on selling one photo for $1 is more than the 20% of $0 I'm making now. I'm not hoping to get rich (yet) but just want to see what is possible. Now I just have to go through the rigorous process of naming and key wording all of my photos I've uploaded thus far. fun...
My only goal at this time is to make enough money from selling that I could support my habit; adding to and upgrade my gear. I've already gotten spousal approval for upgrades but that budget is pretty much set and I've found more things that will help me get better. So I feel that if I can make a couple hundred bucks a year from various sites I can funnel that into better products, not have to take from the family funds, and get what I need to take this to the next level.Chris Deeringhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03889727827899358305noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3410562755089490771.post-16866952311801887332010-02-25T18:28:00.000-06:002010-02-27T09:47:28.225-06:00Winter in the CityI got out of work early today (in training the last few) and decided to head down town to see what I could capture. It was my first dedicated endeavor like this and I had everything I needed in my handy little back pack I got from Elizabeth. Long story short (too late) I didn't get "the shot". I wouldn't even say I got anything too interesting. I don't know whether it was lighting, as it was an over cast day, or I'm just not a cityscape guy, but I was mildly disappointed by what I got. I may post some pics here when I clean them a little but don't get your hopes up.
One thing today's walkabout did produce was I got to know this city a little better. I went first to the roof of the Sam's Town parking garage and got some city shots then on to Texas Street for some building shots and stopped by the library for some photos for the Mrs. I then drove east to the Music museum. I was a little confused when getting out of my car I saw engraved in the building "Dedicated to the memory of those who fought in the World War". I couldn't figure out which war that were talking about until I realized at the time the building was built there was only one World War. Cool! There was a quote by Woodrow Wilson! on the side as well. Next I took a walk across the street to the old city grave yard and saw graves of C.S.A. solders and infants. There was one section of graves from East European Jewish immigrants from the 1800s. There were other graves all over of people from Germany, Prussia, France, Switzerland. I never new Shreveport had so much immigration back in the 1850s. It was very cool.

I plan on suggesting to Perry (our workshop instructor) we do a class downtown and maybe I can get some inspiration from my fellow shooters.
